Ear Medication Routine – CHRONIC otitis externa

For a routine ear infection – we usually use one medicine which is supposed to kill the germs or yeasts (or both) that are observed in the ear. It’s simple: The ear’s messed up – we put medicine in there for a week, and bang – all better.

BUT NOo-o-o-o-oo   sometimes additional factors like “genetics” and “ear shape” and “ear hair” and just plain bad luck create the situation where “We just can’t really stop these infections coming back every four or five months.”

Okay, that’s a “Chronic Otitis” You start to think – “We might not ever “cure” this  –  but perhaps there’s a way to exert good control – sort of easily.

Here’s how we can attack these:

How to Clean Ears With VetSol

Simple – Yeah I guess. If they’ll let you!      Lift ear flap. Flood ear with Ear Cleaner. Squish the base of the ear. If you don’t have fingernails you can even massage the inside of the canal (and a strong stomach)  -à BLOT excess with a little paper towel or similar. Let ‘em shake out the rest. Some people are irrigating the ears every THIRD day, basically for as long as they can remember to – to avoid the time and expense of visits to the Vet directed at chronic otitis externa.

Alternatives: (Articles coming soon)  Alternate Otomax x Miconazole 2% according to the schedule above: Morning: Miconazole and Evening: Otomax.

Alternative Ear cleaner:  Cetaphil Soap / Lotion used as an ear cleaner. Put the Cetaphil liquid in the ear, squish it around, rinse well with warm water. Blot dry. Apply Otomax to repel water with oil.
