Be Careful of “Your Dog Will Love It” Hazardously Fat Foods!
Have you ever wondered why your dog absolutely devours some foods and barely touches others?
A lot of the time, it comes down to **fat**.
Some very expensive dog foods are incredibly palatable because they’re extremely high in fat. And dogs LOVE fat. Think about it like melting butter over their dinner. Of course they’re going to eat it. Examples of diets over thirty percent fat include The Harmer’s Dog and Dr Marty’s Expensive Internet Food.
Seriously, “my dog loves it” doesn’t necessarily mean “it’s good for my dog.”
Very high-fat diets can pack on calories fast, encourage overeating, and in susceptible dogs may increase the risk of pancreatitis.
So I don’t choose a dog food based on how ferociously a dog eats it.
One food I like for many dogs is **Kirkland Salmon and Sweet Potato** from Costco. It’s reasonably priced, nutritionally solid, and dogs generally do very well on it.
There are plenty of other good diets, too.
The point is: **don’t turn your dog’s dinner into a bag of fat just to make them eat.**
Sometimes a healthy dog who’s being picky can simply afford to get hungry.
And sometimes, the less expensive food is actually the better choice.
