| About, 2 weeks ago a customer called about a fish on its side. I went out and the fish was alive and “strong” could swim upright but would “lay down” after. We decided to wait until water warmed to address issues. Was there today and that fish was on its side again but moving upright. I did some minor maintenance. About an hour ago customer called with another koi doing the same thing. |

Hey there!
Okay so 2 weeks ago, a layover fish.
Two weeks later that fish is “better” but another fish is doing the layover
That to me has been a clinically strong fish, not weak and dying, but seems not to care about up or laid over. Not disoriented, just willing to lay over like nothing’s wrong til you bother them.
That CAN be “sleeping sickness”
And that isn’t THAT big of a deal.
Not very many fish have died of that, but some have. In large fisheries, laying over can get you killed, by not eating well, by predators and the rearing ponds for feedfish are too big to salt or heat.
However in regular hobbyists ponds, salt is available and even to some, practical. And it helps. So does warm water.

They were about to kill all the fish with CEVD in Germany and then they found out most of the fish in Germany carried the virus. It was ‘endemic’ and showed up during times of stress. It’s described in the articles.
It was like when our government was going to test-and-bury all fish with SVC until they found out that 80+% of cyprinids in nature carry SVC. In nature, SVC and CEVD are “old news”
Another possibility is “stray voltage” which can be checked pretty easily. Stray voltage would read like 110-120volts but at very very low amperage. You need a low amperage meter. Put one end in the water and put the other probe in the GROUND hole of an outlet.
