Comparing a Gravel Pond Schema to a “Proper” Koi Pond

It’s too easy to bash “the other guy’s” pond technology without understanding what’s actually going on. When in fact they are just two DIFFERENT ways of providing your Koi a very suitable home.

Commonly, issues like “too small” or “neglect” or “overfeeding and lack of water quality control” ruin-it-up for hobbyists with EITHER type of pond, and that’s a problem regardless of the pond-schema you choose.

  • All systems hold poop in the water column. Either in the gravel, or in the filter.
  • Some systems are MUCH easier to clean.
  • Some systems require daily attention and some systems only annual attention.
  • Some systems encourage breeding behavior and basking. Some systems can’t.
  • Some systems benefit from a natural appearance and nitrate reducing live plants. Some systems are engineered almost solely to highlight the fish.
